7 youth hikers taken to Utah hospitals after lightning strike

SALINA, Utah: A youth group of seven hikers in Utah who were struck by lightning were sent to the hospital this week.

Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis said in a statement that the youths from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from Salina, Utah, were in the eastern part of Sevier County around 1:45 p.m. when a light rain began, and the lightning hit.

“Approximately 50 youth felt the shock of the lightning,” The Associated Press said, quoting Curtis, adding that seven of the young people had “medical concerns due to the electrocution.”

Two were in serious condition and were flown by helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Lehi, Utah. Ambulances took the other five to Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield and Gunnison Valley Hospital in Gunnison.

Curtis said none of the injuries were considered life-threatening, and the other hikers were sent back to their families in Salina, which is 139 miles south of Salt Lake City.
