BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) — The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

FOURTH BATCH OF ASTRONAUTS

Ten candidates, including eight space pilots and two payload specialists, have been selected for China’s fourth batch of astronauts, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced on Tuesday.

NEW SPECIES

Chinese researchers have discovered a new fungus species, Cystoderma yongpingense, in Yongping County of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

The findings, published in the academic journal Mycoscience, have revealed that the species’ pileus is wrinkled with a persistent annulus that is membranous and floccose-scaly, and its color ranges from light orange-red to orange-red.

CORE DRILLING

Multinational researchers have been carrying out a core drilling project in Nam Co, the world’s highest saltwater lake in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, since early June, providing data on climate and environmental changes on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau over the past million years.

The joint scientific expedition team comprises a lake and environmental change research team from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and scientists and drilling technicians from countries including Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
