China science, technology news summary — June 27

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhua) — The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

INNOVATION-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT

Wang Huning, China’s top political advisor, has called on relevant political advisors to do more research, deliver more suggestions and build consensus for the country’s innovation-driven development and its strength in science and technology.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at a Chairperson’s Council meeting of the 14th CPPCC National Committee in Beijing on Wednesday, which he also chaired.

5G BASE STATIONS

There were more than 3.8 million 5G base stations in China by the end of May 2024, the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has shown.

GSMA, an international operator association, has forecast that China’s number of 5G connections will hit 1.6 billion by the end of 2030 — nearly a third of the global total.

CHANG’E-5 SAMPLES

Chinese researchers have for the first time discovered natural few-layer graphene in the lunar soil samples brought back by the Chang’e-5 mission, following observation and analysis of the samples.

Researchers used the correlative Scanning Electron Microscope/Raman technique to collect Raman spectra in several spots with relatively high carbon content in the lunar soil samples, confirming that the crystalline quality of the graphite carbon in the samples is relatively high.
