Heavy rains, floods in Afghanistan kill at least 84 people

ISLAMABAD, Afghanistan: At least 84 people are confirmed dead following heavy rains in north Afghanistan over the weekend.

This follows hundreds who have died in past weeks due to flash floods caused by rains.

Saturday night saw floods in Afghanistan’s Faryab province, leaving 66 dead, five injured and eight missing. On Friday, 18 more people died in floods, said Esmatullah Moradi, spokesman for the provincial governor in Faryab, according to the Associated Press.

Moradi reported that some 1,500 houses were either completely or partially destroyed. Also, farmland was washed away and over 300 animals were killed.

Additionally, 50 people were reported dead due to floods in the western province of Ghor on Friday.

Similar floods took the lives of 70 Afghanis in April, also destroying 2,000 homes, three mosques and four schools in western Farah and Herat, and southern Zabul and Kandahar provinces.
