TUNIS, April 29 (Xinhua) — At least 9.37 million tourists visited Tunisia in 2023, marking a rise of 45.5 percent compared to 2022, said Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) on Monday, citing figures by the Tourism and Handicrafts Ministry.
The trend of growth has persisted into the current year, with tourist arrivals reaching close to 2.125 million from Jan. 1 to April 20, 2024, a notable 9.6 percent rise compared to the same period in 2023.
“The government expects a revival of the tourism sector in 2024 and is working to maintain the good results recorded in 2023,” the TAP quoted the Tunisian Minister of Tourism Mohamed Moez Belhassine as saying.
Moreover, Belhassine noted that his ministry is working to further improve the quality of services, infrastructure, tourist transport, environment, and accommodation.
Tunisian authorities have been seeking to promote the tourism sector, which fell significantly in 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
