Poland to invest 760 mln U.S. dollars in cybersecurity

WARSAW, June 3 (Xinhua) — The Polish government plans to allocate more than 3 billion zloty (760 million U.S. dollars) for cybersecurity investments, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization Krzysztof Gawkowski said on Monday.

Gawkowski told a press conference that the Ministry of Interior and Administration, in collaboration with the Ministry of Digitalization, will focus on directing new investments towards cybersecurity. This strategic move comes in response to a significant rise in cyberattacks observed in the country, he said.

The investment will be channeled into the “cybershield” program, aimed at conducting regular security assessments, enhancing resilience within critical infrastructures, and ultimately ensuring the security of Polish citizens, Gawkowski said.

He disclosed that the Polish Press Agency (PAP) fell victim to an attack by Russian hackers last Friday. The hackers managed to publish a false announcement regarding a partial military mobilization in Poland through the agency’s news feed.

At Monday’s press conference, Minister of Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak said that his ministry is currently grappling with hackers acting on behalf of a foreign nation with substantial or seemingly limitless resources.

He said the recent cyberattacks are aimed at disrupting the upcoming European Parliament elections.
