COLOMBO, April 30 (Xinhua) — The Sri Lankan cabinet has decided to implement recommendations to make the Mirissa marine zone in the southern part of the country a blue flag coastal zone and a marine wildlife sanctuary, a statement from the government’s information department said on Tuesday.
A ministerial sub-committee has made recommendations aimed at uplifting the tourism economy of the Southern Province by turning the Mirissa marine zone into a blue flag coastal zone and a marine wildlife sanctuary conforming to international standards.
The sub-committee headed by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has been appointed to further study the proposal with the participation of all relevant parties and submit recommendations to the cabinet.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by the prime minister to implement those recommendations through relevant ministries and institutions, the department said.
