Wildfire causes evacuations in Arizona desert community of Kearny

KEARNY, Arizona: As a wildfire threatens the rural community of Kearny, police have evacuated 180 residents.

Thus far, two buildings in Kearny have been destroyed by the wildfire.

The wildfire began Tuesday, scorching 475 acres and has not been contained, said Tiffany Davila, spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

Kearny is a desert community located 75 miles north of Tucson and has a population of about 1,800.

Authorities have said that if left unchecked, the wildfire will threaten a water treatment plant, copper mine, school district office and railroad line.

Meanwhile, a shelter has been opened in a local school, according to Pinal County officials.

In a precautionary move, electricity has been cut off in northern Kearny and four air tankers have been dropping water to assist crews on the ground in fighting the fire.

Officials have said that the cause of the wildfire remains unknown.
